Light Academy, located in Itara, Uganda, is home to over 400 children we care for—making it one of the most underserved communities we serve outside of the ghetto.
During the week, classes are held inside Daystar Light Church. For about 60 of the children, this church is more than a classroom—it’s their home. With no parents to care for them, they sleep here every night under the loving care of Pastor Stella.
Until recently, the children had no desks, beds, dorms, or proper facilities—only walls of metal sheets and a dirt floor. Students sat on the red dirt for lessons, ate their modest meals of posho and beans on the ground, and during the rainy season, were forced to sleep on cold, muddy floors.
In January, a visiting family fell in love with the children of Itara and decided things had to change. Thanks to their generosity, Daystar Light Church and Light Academy now have a solid cement floor and reinforced walls! The joy was unforgettable as bags of cement arrived—students and staff alike celebrated the transformation of their school.
While this is a huge step forward, the needs remain great. Fewer than 30 of the 400+ students have sponsors—far short of what’s needed to provide daily meals. We continue to send funds for one meal per day, but Pastor Stella often takes personal loans just to ensure the children can eat two meals.
The need is urgent. You can be part of the solution. By sponsoring a child or giving directly to Light Academy, you can help change the future for these precious students.
