Lighthouse Primary School and Home for Children officially opened its doors in January, welcoming 100 students from Kasese, Uganda, ranging from grades one through seven. Nestled between the Rwenzori Mountains and Lake George, the school is just a short drive from Queen Elizabeth National Park. Tourists visiting this area are often delighted to witness elephants roaming along the roads and enjoy stopping for a photo at the equator.
However, Kasese remains one of the most impoverished communities that ONE30 Network serves in Uganda. Despite the presence of several mining companies providing employment opportunities, over 80% of families in the region live below the poverty line. Limited access to healthcare forces many residents to turn to witch doctors and alternative medicine in times of desperation. Additionally, many children are unable to attend school, as their families cannot afford the associated fees. Food scarcity and malnutrition are prevalent, and clean drinking water remains a significant challenge.
Recognizing the immense need in this region, our partner, Daystar Church in Cullman, AL, has committed to making a difference for 350 children living in these substandard conditions. Daystar has been supporting these children for over a decade, and this vision has now culminated in the establishment of a dedicated school and home for orphans and vulnerable children in Kasese.
On the twelve-acre campus known as Daystar Village, significant progress has been made. To date, the following infrastructure has been completed: two dormitories, bathrooms, a kitchen, a well with a pump house, administrative offices, staff housing, and a classroom building. Additionally, a robust security wall has been erected around the property, and armed military guards have been hired to ensure the children’s safety, enabling them to thrive in a nurturing and educational environment. A dedicated team of teachers, cooks, matrons, housekeepers, and other staff has been assembled. Every effort has been made to ensure that Lighthouse Primary School serves as a “city on a hill,” where the light of Jesus can shine brightly. ONE30 Network and Daystar Church firmly believe these children represent the future of the world.
Despite these accomplishments, over 200 children remain at the former location, eagerly awaiting the opportunity to join their friends and classmates. To facilitate their transition, additional infrastructure is required, including two more dormitories and another classroom block. Furthermore, a multi-purpose facility is needed to serve as a chapel, testing center, and special assembly venue. Plans also include the addition of a playground and landscaping to complete this phase of construction.
Looking ahead, the long-term vision for Daystar Village includes the establishment of a Secondary School, Trade School, and Agricultural Center. By incorporating livestock and crop cultivation, students will gain valuable life skills while contributing to a self-sustaining community that supports economic empowerment and transformation.
ONE30 Network is honored to partner with Daystar Church and our generous donors to provide essential care, education, and economic support to orphans and vulnerable children. We take great pride in fostering a Christ-centered community that nurtures and empowers these young lives.
